On with the guide!
How to purchase a SiteGround hosting package
Buying a hosting package from SiteGround is very straightforward. Head on over to the SiteGround website, select a package and follow the easy steps to buy.
Let’s go a little deeper…
This guide is about WordPress hosting, so select the option that says “Managed WordPress Hosting” and hit “Get Started”.
You will then see a selection of hosting packages to choose from. The package that’s right for you depends on your needs.
Let’s explore that for a minute.
At this moment in time, SiteGround offers the following 3 hosting packages for WordPress managed hosting:
The prices and details you see in the screenshot above are as per the time of me creating this content, so you can be sure this will no longer be up to date in the years to come since prices can change, discounts can be applied and features can be updated. So don’t come looking for me if you feel saddened because the prices are no longer as you see in the screenshot. It’s how life is.
Also, let’s reveal the fine print here:
We require an annual purchase paid in advance for the special price to apply. Special prices are applicable for your first invoice. For all subsequent renewals regular prices apply.
Rad, let’s take a look under the hood at these options.
StartUp Managed WordPress Hosting
This is the option for beginners. If you’re just starting a blog or a small business, go for this one.
Here’s what you get:
1 Website: this means you can install and manage a single website. Pretty self-explanatory really.
10 GB Web Space: this is how much space you have for your actual website files. If you’re planning on uploading terabytes of videos every month and hosting mega-large files, this is not going to last long. You should look at other options. But for a small business or blog this will be more than sufficient.
~10,000 Visits Monthly: this is now many visits per month your website will support. If you exceed this, your website will not be available for more visitors. Again, perfectly OK for the small business or blog, but if you suddenly “go viral” and start getting mentioned by Oprah or a Kardashian, you will need a higher hosting package. First world problems to have, amiright?
Unmetered Traffic: oooh…this sounds cool, what does it mean? Unmetered Traffic refers to Data Transfer. SiteGround states:
We provide you with unmetered data transfer for your website, so that you can host almost any kind of personal, small business and community website and grow freely to attract more and more visitors.
Free WP Installation: WordPress is installed. For Free.
Free WP Migrator: this feature is super nifty and I have used it myself to transfer from a different web host to SiteGround. Simply install the SiteGround WordPress Migrator plugin on your old website and follow the easy steps to move your site.
WordPress Autoupdates: I hate having to update WordPress whenever a new version is released – and this happens OFTEN. Luckily, with the WordPress Autoupdates feature you don’t have to hassle. All the updates can be configured to be automatic within a certain timeframe, or you can even skip an update if you need more time to prepare for it. Easy peasy.
Free SSL: Your website needs an SSL certificate for a number of reasons, including security and SEO best practice. SiteGround provides a FREE SSL certificate using Let’s Encrypt.
Daily Backup: this feature is a godsend – I cannot tell you how often I have needed to use the restore from backup option if I am messing around with templates and plugins and can’t fix it for some reason. The Daily Backup allows me to have a daily restore point – and SiteGround saves and keeps 30 copies of your account.
Free CDN: what’s a CDN you ask? A Content Delivery Network (or CDN) significantly speeds up your website so that it loads from a server closest to where your visitor is. SiteGround has partnered with the Cloudflare CDN which currently has 152 locations worldwide from where your site can be served to local visitors.
Free Email: you no longer need to use that Yahoo or Hotmail email address to email clients. Get a professional looking email address for free with your SiteGround hosting account. You can create as many email addresses as you want and access them through a friendly web interface.
WP-CLI and SSH: to be honest, I had to Google this one. WP-CLI (WordPress Command Line Interface) and SSH (Secure Shell) is for advanced users and allows you to update plugins, configure multisite installations and do a whole lot more using a command-line interface without a web browser.
Out-of-the-box Caching: there’s no need to invest in a separate caching plugin to speed up your site. SiteGround-hosted sites come with SuperCacher technology and caching is enabled by default. That means your site loads fast – very fast.
Unlimited Databases: you can create an unlimited number of MySQL databases (as long as a database does not exceed 1,000 MB in size). That’s a GIG. That’s plenty.
100% renewable energy match: SiteGround partners with Google Cloud which matches 100% of the energy consumed by its global operations with renewable energy. That’s very, very good for the climate and the planet’s future.
30-Days Money-Back: well, that really means that SiteGround is putting their money where their mouth is. If you’re not happy with SiteGround you’ll get a full refund of hosting fees within 30 days of signup.
Add Collaborators: do you have a business partner? You can easily add them to your SiteGround account as a collaborator, so there’s no need to send them your login details – give them their own!
GrowBig Managed WordPress Hosting
Here you get everything that you would get with the StartUp package PLUS the following:
20GB Web Space: that’s 10GB more than the StartUp package.
~25,000 Visits Monthly
On-demand Backup Copies: make backups whenever you want and have them instantly available. You can create up to 5 on-demand backups at a time.
Ultrafast PHP: this feature will really speed up your website and reduce the TTFB (time to first byte). The web server will also be able to process more visitors faster.
Staging: are you working with a web developer or web dev team and do you want them to work in a different environment to your live site before going live? You can do this with the staging feature. Pushing from staging to the live site can be done with one click.
GoGeek Managed WordPress Hosting
Here you get everything that you would get with the StartUp and GrowBig packages PLUS the following:
Staging + Git: not only do you get a Staging environment, you can also integrate with Git so that you can create repositories of your website using Git.
White-label Clients: you can register your clients as users in your account and give them white-label access to the Site Tools of their website. This means you can provide white-label hosting services to your clients.
Highest Tier of Resources: the GoGeek plan is the top plan for shared WordPress hosting. This means that the most performance is given to accounts with the GoGeek plan for ultrafast and reliable web hosting.
Priority Support: if you need assistance fast, the GoGeek plan will give you priority support with the most experienced and senior support agents. You’re basically a VIP. Nice.

Let’s talk about security – how does SiteGround protect your WordPress website?
Security is the number one priority for any website owner, and SiteGround takes this seriously.
Some of the security measures SiteGround implements include the following:
- Web servers are automatically set to the latest PHP version which includes all the necessary security updates
- SiteGround runs Apache in a chrooted environment with suEXEC support – this feature considerably reduces security risks
- Malicious bots and attackers are constantly monitored, detected and prevented
- All shared servers include ModSecurity which provides protection from a range of attacks and allows for real-time monitoring and analysis
- WordPress core is auto-updated so your website always has the latest version of WordPress installed – and you can control when and how these updates are applied
- Database service applications are constantly updated e.g. FTP, SMTP, IMAP/POP3, HTTP, HTTPS) and include the latest security patches
- Web application firewalls constantly monitor for any system vulnerabilities
- User data is secured using strict protocols and policies that include comprehensive record keeping
Domain name registration
What’s in a name, you ask? Well, it’s a very important part of your online business. Your domain name needs to be carefully chosen to be memorable and if you are intending to target a global audience and grow your credibility, register a .com domain.
If you have an existing domain registered, great. You can simply log in to your domain registration account and point the domain to the IP address of your new SiteGround web hosting account. SiteGround provides great support for how to do this using popular domain registrars like GoDaddy or NameCheap. I had an existing domain name with NameCheap and I easily pointed this domain to the SiteGround IP address for my website.
Alternatively, and this is a little less hassle, simply register your domain name with SiteGround during your account signup and set up process.
SiteGround offers domain registration services for popular domains like .com, .net. org etc – but also country domains like .co.uk or special domains like .shop, .blog and many more!
Why do I personally use SiteGround to host this website?
Well to be honest it comes down to two things for me:
I don’t mind paying a monthly hosting fee. Yes, I am aware that there are many other ways to get cheaper, faster hosting BUT I am also not very technically savvy and I like the fact that I can have a website up and running for a small monthly cost and this frees up my time to just do what I like doing, which is create content for y’all
Secondly, performance. My websites have always been on the slow side but with a combination of low-size images, a fast-loading, optimised WordPress template and out-of-the-box setup from SiteGround hosting, my website is doing pretty damn well in terms of load speed.
Fully loaded in less than 2 seconds and an A grade on GTMetrix makes me happy. And if you check out my SEO tutorial for Wordress, you will know why.
